Mauricio Pochettino has compared Glasgow Rangers’ Steven Davis to Andres Iniesta and Xavi.
Davis similar to World Cup-winning duo
The 35-year-old is set to make history for Northern Ireland against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday. If he makes it on to the pitch, he will earn his 120th cap, surpassing record-holder Pat Jennings in the process.
In anticipation of the event, Sky Sports asked a host of names about the Ibrox midfielder, and there were some wonderful words for him, as Steven Gerrard hailed him as “special“. Pochettino, his manager at Southampton, was particularly glowing in his appraisal. He said:
“The talent of him I compare to football people like Xavi and [Andreas] Iniesta. You put him in the same level as this type of player because of this capacity to play football, be a playmaker, the intelligence to read the game, his capacity to run. I think to compare Christian Eriksen to this type of player too, they make your team better.”
Northern Ireland legend
The midfielder deserves all the praise he gets for what has been a fantastic career. He has 306 Premier League appearances to his name, which takes some doing, but it is with the Gers where he has truly become a legend. He has played 70 times for the 54-time Scottish champions in this second spell, although it was his first stint that set him on the path to greatness. He managed four full seasons at the club, and racked up at least 10 assists in every league campaign.
Does Davis still have a role to play at Ibrox?
This latest monumental moment, albeit on the international stage, is the cherry on top of the cake. Is he as good as either Xavi and Iniesta? That is of course up for debate – the Spanish duo have won it all. But the fact there has even been a comparison shows just how good Davis is. Northern Ireland and Rangers fans should enjoy his ability while it lasts.
