Newcastle United fans in the Transfer Tavern will be expecting their side to make a number of changes this summer as they look to build on last season’s efforts.
The Magpies finished in the top-half of the Premier League in their first campaign back in the top-flight following promotion from the Championship, however, Rafa Benitez is keen to add more recruits to his squad in order to help Newcastle build on their success thus far.
The Toon Army may have to sell players in order to fund new arrivals, with the likes of Dwight Gayle being rumoured with a switch to Stoke City in the last couple of days. However, according to a report in the Newcastle Chronicle, the attacker is happy to remain at St. James’ Park.
The attacker made an impact during the second half of the season, scoring six times in his 23 Premier League starts, although his place in the first-team could come under threat if Benitez is successful in his quest to add more firepower to his squad.
Landlord’s Verdict
The 27-year-old has played well for the Magpies since his arrival from Crystal Palace – particularly in the Championship when he was the main man – however, he found it more difficult to replicate his performances in the top-flight last season.
Should Newcastle receive an offer of £10 million or more for Gayle’s services, the locals in the Tavern will feel that the club should cash in on him and reinvest the money in a new striker who possesses the natural ability to find the back of the net on a consistent basis.
