The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern have been tearing into their owner, Mike Ashley. The Sports Direct owner saw his side relegated in the 2015/16 season, and the lack of Premier League money in the 2016/17 season has seen their club’s finances take a huge fit, leaving them with little transfer money to spend in the current window. Newcastle fans have been stuck in a constant struggle over the last few seasons, wanting their tyrant owner to invest money for the club to spend on players. However, over the last few seasons Rafa Benitez hasn’t had the cash he thought he would have, and with the club’s overachieving this season, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Ashley fail to invest in the club as the 10th placed Premier League finish with a minimal budget could convince Ashley that Benitez can get by without funding.
Despite this, Benitez has been embroiled in contract talks as of late and the talks have been centred around whether or not the club has the same vision going forward that he does. The Spaniard obviously loves Newcastle and wants to stay at St James Park, but whether he can continue to deliver whilst he’s working with the scraps that Ashley’s been providing him is another story, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him leave for a club where he’ll receive more financial backing.
You can read our local Geordies’ verdict on their club’s finances here:
Relegation and huge drops in revenue were once again down to the owners haphazard approach to the club. Do us all a favour and set a realistic price and sell us and move on.

Say goodbye to Rafa, this essentially says you have no money to spend on new signings @Matt_Wareham

10yrs of smoke & mirrors leads me to believe that this release is a PR tactic to lower transfer expectations. Why else publish it now, at the start of another window?
