The People are reporting that Liverpool and Chelsea are fighting it out for Wigan midfielder James McCarthy.
The Irish international has impressed for the Latics since arriving from Hamilton for little over a million in 2009. The Reds had been interested in the player prior to his move from Hamilton and Assistant Manager Sammy Lee scouted the 20 year old in the match against Everton a few weeks ago and gave a glowing report back to Kenny Dalglish.
The Reds are targeting 3 midfield signings, according to the paper, and are hoping to steal a march on Chelsea, who are also interested in the player. McCarthy could cost as much as £8million though, as Wigan manager Roberto Martinez rates him very highly.
Is the grade of player the Reds should be looking to rebuild with? Surely in a youth set up as well structured as Liverpool’s there has to be a better answer closer to home?
