Lawwell and Rodgers failed to address lack of quality at heart of defence

Celtic haven’t gotten off to the best of starts this season as they find themselves out of the Champions League and struggling in the Scottish Premiership.

The Hoops are in a battle to secure the treble in the current campaign as Rangers seem to have come on leaps and bounds under Steven Gerrard so far this season.

Indeed, Celtic’s chief executive Peter Lawwell and manager Brendan Rodgers haven’t been as active as many thought they would be this summer. And, it’s safe to say that they may have made a mistake by leaving things to the last minute as their performances so far this season haven’t been the most convincing.

Worryingly, the Hoops are still struggling to ensure solidity at the back in the current campaign as Virgil Van Dijk’s departure continues to cause problems.

Dedryck Boyata has been linked with a move away to a number of clubs, which leaves Brendan Rodgers struggling for quality at the heart of the defence as the Belgian was their star man last season.

Although there’s no Champions League to worry about, the Hoops could still find themselves in a spot of bother due to their defensive problems. And, with Rangers getting stronger and stronger by the day, it might not be long until Rodgers realises that he needs to think about investing in a world-class central defender.
