Celtic successfully secured their passage into the group stages of the Europa League last night as they comfortably saw off the challenge of FK Suduva by 3 goals to nil on the night.
It was a result which the Hoops desperately needed in midst of a turbulent summer, but the turbulence may yet return on deadline day. With clubs from Europe already beginning to circle around Moussa Dembele there’s no doubt that Celtic’s resolve will be tested on the final day of the window.
But the talk of potential departures is not the only story for supporters to ponder over on deadline day as Celtic’s need to address their defensive issues could force Rodgers to make a late swoop to sign a new defender.
The future of Dedryck Boyata has been cast into some doubt in recent weeks but it appears that he will be staying at the club for now, and a a recent report suggests he could be joined by a fantastic prospect for the future by the end of the day.
Here’s what Celtic’s dream end to the window would look like…
Indeed, interest from the continent for Moussa Dembele is beginning to intensify as Celtic rejected a bid worth £16 million last night according to L’equipe (via Goal LIVE 07:31).
The news will arrive as temporary relief for the Celtic supporters who are still firmly aware that a deal could go through on deadline day.
Not only would the club be losing an incredibly talented player, but it’s likely they would be left with just 2 senior strikers to chose from until January, thus tarnishing their hopes of clinching an 8th straight SPFL title.
Naturally, the ideal scenario is one which would see Dembele remain at Celtic Park until the end of the season – despite his recent social media outburst – so the club can scout the market for an ideal replacement, but time will tell whether the 22-year-old will leave Celtic short in a vital position…
Filip Benkovic joins on loan
Celtic’s focus on keeping Dembele should not take up all their attention on deadline day as their need to sign a new defender is a pressing matter which needs addressing.
And it appears that Rodgers is set to make a very shrewd addition to his defensive options indeed, as the Leicester Mercury have reported that Celtic are closing in on a deadline day deal to sign Filip Benkovic.
The 6ft 4in defender only recently arrived at Leicester City in a £13 million deal from Dinamo Zagreb, but with plenty of defensive options in his squad it appears Claude Puel sees little opportunity for first-team football this season.
At Celtic he will have a fantastic opportunity to adapt to a new style of football and get plenty of valuable experience under his belt before returning to the King Power next season.
Not only is Benkovic a commanding physical and aerial presence at both ends of the pitch, he is an intelligent ball-player with the technical quality to complement his traditional defensive attributes.
Benkovic has the potential to become a huge success at Celtic.
