Sels departure has pleased a lot of Newcastle fans

A lot of Newcastle fans would be disappointed to see some of their more high calibre players leave, however, not one fan will be moaning that they’ve sold Matz Sels. The Belgian ‘keeper ended his two-year stay at the club yesterday when he agreed a deal to sign for French club, Strasbourg.

By some miracle, Mike Ashley has managed to get a fee of £4 million out of Sels, who was a Karius-esque figure on Tyneside, with very little backing from the fans that he could go on and retake the number one shirt fro Martin Dubravka. It was obvious the club would be selling at least one ‘keeper and it still wouldn’t be surprising to see one of either Rob Elliot or Karl Darlow allowed to leave St James Park.

Yesterday also saw the money from Sels going straight back out as the Geordies completed the signing of Fabian Schar from Deportivo La Coruna for around £3.5 million, meaning that, to the surprise of no one, Mike Ashley made a profit. A lot of supporters will be expecting some more investment from their club this window and with a few deals in the pipeline, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Ashley come out of nowhere and help Rafa Benitez secure some of his targets.
