Southampton absolutely must hijack West Brom’s move for £2.7m-rated goal machine

Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping to see plenty of new faces arrive at St. Mary’s now the transfer window is officially open.

Our punters are glad the season is finally over following a disastrous campaign which saw the Saints embroiled in a relegation battle. Mark Hughes replaced Mauricio Pellegrino and guided the club to safety on the final day of the season. The Welshman has since been given a new contract after impressing the Southampton brass.

Hughes can now begin to revamp the squad in order to avoid another relegation dogfight next term. A lack of goals hurt the Saints last season, a new striker will be high on the former Stoke boss’ shortlist. West Brom are also on the lookout for a new forward and are interested in luring Bristol City striker, Bobby Reid, to the Hawthorns.

Valued at £2.7m by Transfermarkt, Southampton should look to hijack the deal and bring the striker to the Premier League. Reid was a stand out star in the Championship last season, netting an impressive 19 goals in the league and a further two in the EFL Cup. He also picked up seven assists for his team-mates as Bristol ended the season in mid-table.

The 25-year-old has just one year remaining on his contract meaning the Saints might be able to pick up a cheap deal. Southampton can offer Reid the chance to play in the Premier League, giving them the advantage over relegated West Brom in the race for his signature.

Capable as a number nine or a number ten, signing Reid would be a great piece of business.
