The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern have been responding to a report from The Chronicle that claims Mike Ashley is desperate to keep Rafa Benitez at St James Park. Benitez was appointed back in early 2016 but couldn’t undo the work done by Steve McClaren as he saw Newcastle relegated. Two years on, Benitez is still in charge in the Northeast and looks set to help The Magpies to Premier League survival.
The Geordies propping up our bar will be delighted to hear that Ashley wants to keep Benitez at the club, although they’re unsure about Ashley’s methods of going about it. Ashley has been looking to sell the North East club for a number of years now and currently has an offer on the table from Amanda Staveley which apparently hinges on the position in which Newcastle finish this season.
Newcastle United currently sit in 13th in the Premier League table and four points clear of the drop zone. Whilst Benitez work isn’t yet complete in ensuring Newcastle’s Premier League status stays intact, it’s now looking very unlikely that the club will find themselves dropping back down to the Championship. Our local Magpies will be looking ahead to brighter times as they hope to be competing in the Premier League under a new owner next season.
Here’s our resident Toon Army’s verdict:
Not really. Just accept a bid for the club. Job done.

Mike Ashley needs to catch a wake up! He has devout supporters and a devout coach, we’re tired of the scraps he’s handing the club! @NUFC #NUFC
