Sunderland have handed a player who was once dubbed to have ‘massive potential’ a trial at the club.
According to a report by The Sunderland Echo, Chelsea’s Ruben Sammut has joined the Black Cats ahead of a potential full-time switch.
The 21-year-old’s current contract at Stamford Bridge is set to expire in the summer and is yet to feature for the Premier League side.
He played in Sunderland’s Under-23 side on Monday evening as he was given a chance to impress those onlooking.
Having captained the Premier League side’s developmental team, he spent time out on loan at Falkirk, where then-manager Paul Hartley described Sammut as having ‘massive potential’.
A Scotland Under-21 international, Sammut is a midfielder by trade, however, he offers the versatility of being able to play at the back as well.
The Verdict:
A move to Sunderland could be exactly what Sammut needs in order to take the next step in his football career.
The Black Cats have a record of providing some of the younger talent chances to play, with Jack Ross handing the likes of Josh Maja, Bali Mumba and Denver Hume their opportunities this season.
However, a move is far from guaranteed at the moment, with Sammut likely going to need to impress in the next Under-23 match before any decision is made about his future.
