The Newcastle fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have been toasting promotion with copious amounts of Brown Ale for what feels like an age by now, but the real test is about to come.

For a newly promoted side with ambitions like Newcastle have of joining the Premier League’s elite clubs in the not too distant future, the first season back should surely be about establishing a foothold in the division.

The good news, though, is that promotion to the Premier League at this most lucrative of times means that there will be money to spend in order to achieve those aims. And Rafael Benitez has never been afraid to spend it.

At the end of every season, it’s always worth looking around the Premier League for players at other clubs who don’t seem to have too much of a chance of breaking into the starting XI. After all, if they don’t fit into one club, who’s to say they won’t be the perfect fit for another?

With that in mind, here are three overlooked Arsenal players Newcastle should be thinking seriously about snapping up…

Lucas Perez

It now seems obvious that Dwight Gayle is a Championship striker of some repute, but a Premier League striker of few goals. With that in mind, Rafael Benitez looks set to add a new striker to the squad ahead of their return to the top flight.

Lucas Perez might represent a gamble to be the main striker at St James’ Park, but adding a new attacking option with the quality and pedigree of Perez could give the Spaniard a new lease of life.

Olivier Giroud

Another attacking option at Arsenal could be an even better one for Newcastle.

Giroud is often mocked at the Emirates Stadium, but that comes from the Gunners’ inability to sign a top striker year after year, and the Frenchman is the physical reminder of failure.

The reality, though, is that Giroud is impressively consistent, and would be a safe bet to bag the goals needed to signal a good return to the Premier League for the Magpies, and if Arsenal do add to their attack, he could be available this summer.

Calum Chambers

His season on loan at Middlesbrough should really be no impediment to a move to Newcastle – even if the Teessiders were relegated, it wasn’t because their defence was porous, it’s because they couldn’t score.

Part of that defensive reliability was down to Chambers’ performances, and that could be crucial to Newcastle next season. No one conceded fewer than the Magpies in the Championship last season, but the Premier League is a harder task, and Benitez will need reinforcements.
