It’s that time of the year here in the Transfer Tavern when some wild transfer stories start getting told.
Whilst some are so outrageous even the most gullible don’t fall for it there are some other rumours that begin to gain substance, and our regular Manchester United fans are no strangers to an odd potential transfer rumour or two.
With Jose Mourinho coming in to manage the side, big changes are expected among the playing staff as the Portuguese looks to transform his new team. They’ll be plenty of links then too but only time will tell which ones come to pass.
Our local Red Devils’ contingent have seen a lot in supporting their club and heard even more concerning whose about to don the famous red shirt next, and whilst they are just rumours being touted, they must have come from somewhere.
There’s always going to be players linked with Old Trafford and naturally the biggest names are a part of that, but sometimes it’s still bit a far fetched. This in mind, here at the Transfer Tavern our landlord has found these FIVE that were somehow once linked with Manchester United…..

Ivan Rakitic

The Croatian was linked to the Old Trafford club in 2014.
A fantastic player but Barcelona were never ever going to let him go, having him only just joining the club at the time and being seen as the long term replacement for Xavi.
Fast forward two years and the former Sevilla man has replaced Xavi perfectly, and is a vital cog in Barca’s machine with United yet to find a man of his calibre in his role.
Sergio Ramos

Ramos played everyone with this. In 2015 it was reported that the Spanish defender and Real Madrid captain was unhappy in the Spanish capital and wanted a move.
A £28 million move was mooted but it soon became clear Ramos just wanted an improved contract with his current club, and had next to no intention of joining the Manchester side and so it’s proven, Ramos is seemingly happier than ever having won the Champions League this season.
Aaron Lennon

This is a good one.
Towards the end of the 2013-14 season the Daily Express reported that Aaron Lennon was set to leave his White Hart Lane misery behind for United.
It had been a desperate season for David Moyes in his first year in charge and clearly he felt Lennon was the answer to their woes.
Make what you want of that but apparently the club were going to offer Javier Hernandez as part of the deal too, Moyes back in anyone?
Steven Gerrard

This would have been incredible and also was never going to happen.
The Liverpool legend was reportedly subject to an offer from Manchester United and the story goes that Gary Neville was sent by Sir Alex Ferguson to try and persuade the Reds’ talisman to switch to their arch rivals.
The likelihood of this going ahead was approximately 0% but that didn’t stop the rumours persisting.
Dirk Kuyt

Another former Liverpool player, the Independent were of the impression the Dutch forward was set to join the Red Devils’ in the Summer window of 2014.
Louis van Gaal was on his way to the club after an impressive World Cup with his national team and was being linked to bringing one of his players.
Probably best for him that he didn’t because Van Gaal out chants would have happened much sooner than they did!
