Under Mike Ashley’s ownership, Newcastle fans haven’t enjoyed the best of transfer windows – something that isn’t likely to change until the club is sold.
After impressing while on loan from Chelsea, ideally, Benitez would like to add Kenedy to his attack on a permanent basis. However, the 22-year-old’s stellar performances at St. James’ Park have caught the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs meaning if the Blues were to sell the ex-Fluminense player, Newcastle would find themselves at the back of the queue.
It’s disappointing for both Benitez and Newcastle supporters that Kenedy is unlikely to return to the club this upcoming season; he added genuine quality and flair to the side. But with the winger having developed significantly during his short stint under Benitez, Chelsea will be open to sending another man from their loan army up North.
The highly-rated Callum Hudson-Odoi would be a great alternative to Kenedy. Like the versatile Brazilian, Hudson-Odoi is strong playing on the left but is also capable of playing on the opposite flank and behind the striker. At the age of 17, the Chelsea man has little experience playing outside of youth football, but has impressed in the few, rare minutes Antonio Conte has given him this season in the FA Cup and Premier League.
Benitez may want someone more developed and not as raw as Hudson-Odoi. However, considering the budget the former Real Madrid and Liverpool manager will have, Newcastle will not be able to find a player whose potential is anywhere close to that of Hudson-Odoi’s.
Even in the Magpies current squad, despite his age, Hudson-Odoi easily has more ability than someone like Christian Atsu and is more technically gifted than the impressive Matt Ritchie.
It remains to be seen whether Chelsea would let Hudson-Odoi leave the club out on loan, especially if a new manager comes in as expected, but Benitez and Newcastle must try their luck if they can’t sign Kenedy.
