Sadio Mane has urged Timo Werner to move to Anfield (as per ESPN) and he could give Liverpool the attacking depth needed to dominate in England and Europe.
The 22-year-old has impressed over the last three seasons since signing for RB Leipzig from Hannover in 2016. He scored 21 goals in each of his side’s last two seasons and has netted 11 so far this campaign.
The Reds don’t have a great squad depth at the moment and are having to prioritise the Premier League and Champions League over domestic cups because of this. Ideally, they would want to be competing for every trophy on offer and signing Werner to share the duties of Roberto Firminho, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane would help reduce fatigue at this stage of the season.
The high-intensity pressing used by Jurgen Klopp’s side means the forward line have to work extremely hard every week, and sometimes every four days, so the youthful energy of the German international would be welcome at Anfield.
Werner didn’t impress during Germany’s disastrous World Cup campaign in the summer, but eight goals in 19 for Joachim Low’s team isn’t too shabby at all. He’s used to playing on the big stage, so a move to Merseyside shouldn’t be overwhelming.
His age means he won’t demand an instant starting spot on the team, keeping the other forwards happy for the moment, and he can be moulded to fit Klopp’s style as an impressionable you player. It’s easier to architect a young player’s game rather than change the way a 30-year-old has been playing for the last decade.
Of course, Liverpool will also need to spend to add depth to their full-back, centre-back and central midfield positions, but signing Werner would be a great start to a very big summer for the club.
Who do you think Liverpool need to sign?
