Total Duds: Morgan Schneiderlin has been a waste of money for Everton

Carlo Ancelotti appears to have several useful options in midfield at Everton.

Andre Gomes, of course, has a strong pedigree having previously played for Barcelona, whilst Tom Davies is a young local lad who, as a result, pulls on the shirt with pride. Gylfi Sigurdsson is another who can have a big impact on matches for the Goodison Park outfit – he scored 13 goals and provided six assists in the Premier League last term as he appeared in every single match in the competition.

However, Morgan Schneiderlin is one who has fallen totally out of favour under Ancelotti – he has appeared just four times in the top flight since the Italian took over in December. In all fairness, though, he has failed to ever really show he could command the midfielder for the Toffees.

At Southampton, where he first made his name, he was stunning – he averaged a Premier League WhoScored rating of over seven in each of his last three campaigns. That convinced Manchester United to part with £25m to take him to Old Trafford – however, he lasted just two seasons and 47 matches at the club before he was on the move again.

He had not looked the same player with the Red Devils, as his WhoScored ratings showed – in the 2015/16 campaign, he managed just 6.92 in the league – and that should have perhaps put Everton off spending £20m on the midfielder in January 2017.

He started well enough, averaging 7.02 as per WhoScored across his first 12 starts in the league, but he would never hit anything near that number again. He started 24 league matches in the 2017/18 campaign, but saw his playing time reduced by more than half the following term.

It has recently been revealed that he will be moving to Nice for next season, with the Toffees bringing in £1.8m – that sees them post a loss of £18.2m after 88 appearances in all competitions. It was a deal that has just not worked out for all involved, and it is the Toffees who have paid the price.
