Top five strikers Spurs should have signed to address their shortage

avb.jpgThere is no getting away from the fact that Tottenham Hotspur needed to sign a striker in the January transfer window and they didn’t. Jermain Defoe has been a shadow of the goalscoring machine we have become used to seeing in recent times and is now out for three weeks with an ankle injury. Likewise Emmanuel Adebayor is yet to find his scoring boots at White Hart Lane this season and has been at the African Cup of Nations with Togo this month.

There were dozens of rumours flying around during the window but Spurs failed to get any business done in regards to recruiting a striker. Youngster Harry Kane has been recalled from an unsuccessful loan spell at Norwich City and could be the clubs only recognised available striker for their clash with Newcastle United on Saturday. Elsewhere Jonathan Obika represents an option with an appearance in the shock FA Cup defeat to Leeds United, but it is likely that Clint Dempsey will lead the line once more.

With the financial force that Spurs usually bring to the transfer windows – seemingly non-existent under Andre Villas-Boas – the lack of a new striker could well damage their hopes of finishing in the top four and qualifying for next seasons Champions League ahead of rivals Arsenal.

Undoubtedly Villas-Boas tried to bring in a new attacking option in Brazilian international Leandro Damiao but it seems he misses that ‘Harry Redkanpp’ relationship with new signings that Spurs have had in recent years bringing players such as Rafael van der Vaart to the club on transfer deadline days. Here is a summary of the top five strikers I feel Spurs should have gone for in the January transfer window.
