Tottenham Hotspur: Club interested in signing Ugurcan Cakir in summer transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir in the summer transfer window, according to a report from Fanatik via Turkish Football.

Cakir has been a regular for his current club this season, starting in 21 league games and conceding just 22 goals (Transfermarkt).

It is suggested that the north London outfit have set aside €25m (£21m) for the 23-year-old, who Jose Mourinho sees as the long-term successor to current number one Hugo Lloris. The report also suggests that Spurs sent scouts to watch the two-time Turkey international in Trabzonspor’s recent game against Besiktas, which finished 2-2.

They could face competition for the young ‘keeper, however, with the Sheffield Star recently suggesting that both Sheffield United and Liverpool were also keen on him.

A new goalkeeper is probably needed at Tottenham. Hugo Lloris is a quality goalkeeper and a World Cup winner but, at 33, the club have to start thinking about bringing in his successor.

Their other shot-stopper is Paulo Gazzaniga, who has played 17 times in the Premier League this term due to an injury to Lloris. He struggled to take his opportunity in the team, however, keeping just two clean sheets in that time (Transfermarkt).

By contrast, Cakir has been enjoying a brilliant season in Turkey. Indeed, he is averaging an impressive 3.6 saves per game in the Super Lig (SofaScore), which is better than Gazzaniga, who has averaged 3.4 (SofaScore).

With him still being just 23, there is still scope for him to get even better, too. He may well be the ideal long-term replacement for Lloris.
