Tottenham defender Eric Dier is 'in line' for a surprise new deal at Spurs, even after serious criticism this season.

The Lowdown: Spurs ship goals...

Spurs have the leakiest Premier League defence in the division's top ten, conceding more goals than any other top flight side north of 11th in the table.

Antonio Conte's side, whilst keeping more clean sheets recently, have also displayed a real vulnerability on more than one occasion - most recently conceding four at the hands of Leicester City.

As such, the north Londoners have been tipped with moves for elite centre-back options in the summer.

The Latest: Dier 'in line' for Spurs deal...

As relayed by journalist Sean Walsh of 90min, Dier is 'in line' for a new deal at Tottenham - even despite coming under-fire at points this season.

He explained:

"Tottenham have been looking at Evan Ndicka, out of contract at end of the season. Eric Dier in line for a new contract, too."

The Verdict: Right choice?

Members of the media have seen fit to criticise the 29-year-old at points over 2022/2023 with Dier being called 'horrendous' last year.

Journalist Ryan Taylor, speaking to GIVEMESPORT, also claimed that the Englishman is 'nowhere near' the required level Spurs and Conte are trying to reach.

That being said, while Dier has been at the centre of some lacklustre performances, he also boasts some impressive stats and can perform on his day.

As per WhoScored, the former Sporting ace averages more clearances per 90 than any Spurs player currently whilst also making Tottenham's second-most blocks per 90.

Given his current deal expires in 2024, perhaps tying him down would allow sporting director Fabio Paratici to demand a higher fee for the player from any interested side.
