Tottenham Hotspur are now interested in signing Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini, according to a new report.

The Lowdown: Conte eyeing defender

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has been considering transfer swoops for numerous centre-backs from the Serie A, with Inter Live detailing back in October that the Italian was considering a £43m bid for Alessandro Bastoni.

According to Football Insider sources, Spurs also emerged as the frontrunners to sign Bastoni's teammate Stefan De Vrij earlier this month, with Conte keen on bringing in a defensive option from his former club.

Now, it appears as though a younger talent has been identified at centre-back, with Scalvini potentially fitting the bill for a January move.

The Latest: Scalvini on Conte's list

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, via Sport Witness, the 19-year-old 'child prodigy' is now on Tottenham's transfer list, having previously been linked to the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

Inter Milan are also willing to try their luck for the youngster, who is currently valued at least £35m, so Spurs will need to spend big if they are to secure his signature.

The Verdict: Make it happen

While the Italian is still very young, having only turned 19 earlier this month, he is already playing at a very high level in the Serie A, cementing himself as an important player for Atalanta this season with 11 Serie A appearances to his name so far.

Such is the potential of the prospect, Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig drew comparisons between him and legendary Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, while also lauding him as 'dominant, elegant & complete', fine praise indeed for the 6 foot 4 colossus.

An average of 2.7 tackles per 90 minutes over the past year means that Scalvini ranks in the 97th percentile compared to his positional peers, displaying that despite his tender years he could make an immediate impact at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and help turn around their poor defensive record in the Premier League so far.
