Tottenham Hotspur have made a formal offer for Barcelona attacker Memphis Depay, claims Spanish journalist Gerard Romero.

The Lowdown: Depay’s Barcelona career

The 28-year-old signed for the Catalan giants last summer on a free transfer upon the expiry of his contract with Lyon.

The Dutchman has made an impressive start to life at his new club, having scored ten goals in his opening 19 league appearances.

However, Depay has also struggled with injuries during this time, with an achilles issue and a hamstring injury forcing him to the sidelines for 13 games.

With those issues and the arrivals of Ferran Torres, Adama Traoré and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the Netherlands international has slipped down Xavi's pecking order, with the vast majority of his appearances coming as a substitute.

The Latest: Spurs make offer

According to Romero (translated by Sport Witness), Barcelona have “received a formal offer” from Tottenham to sign Depay in the summer.

Amid financial struggles, the Spanish club’s sporting director “wonders if he is a good option to make money”, therefore raising the possibility of a sale.

However, Romero’s report indicates that “there is still no answer” over the transfer.

The Verdict: Stunning signing

Hailed as “a scorer at European level, one of the best players” by Barcelona teammate Riqui Puig, it was inevitable that Depay was going to linked with a number of clubs, given the financial situation and comments made by executives at the Catalan club.

Over the past year, Depay has ranked in the 98th percentile in Europe for passes attempted and progressive passes received, and in the 95th percentile for expected assisted, shot-creating actions, progressive carries and dribbles completed (via FB Ref), showing he is an all-round threat up front.

Looking at the Lilywhites, the 28-year-old would be a stunning addition to Conte’s side, who lack depth in the centre-forward role behind Harry Kane.

With Kane, Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Depay, the Italian manager would have four excellent options capable of filling a variety of roles across the attack.
