Tottenham defender Serge Aurier reportedly turned down the chance to join Wolves as part of the deal which saw Matt Doherty move to north London.

Spurs confirmed the signing of the Irish right-back yesterday and, according to the Daily Star, there had been plans to send the £20m-valued Ivorian to Molineux in exchange.

However, the 27-year-old rejected the move as he did not want to link up with Doherty's former club, instead preferring AC Milan as his next destination, with Bayer Leverkusen also mooted as a possibility (as per Daily Star).

There has been plenty of speculation about Aurier's future at Tottenham, with journalist David Ornstein telling a Tifo Football Q&A that Spurs had been on the lookout for a new right-back in the summer transfer window before ultimately signing Doherty.

Earlier this month, The Telegraph's Matt Law had claimed that the Lilywhites were open to offloading the Ivory Coast international to raise funds for a right-back replacement.

Aurier started 31 Premier League matches last season and featured in 42 games in all competitions but has at times drawn scathing criticism from some supporters over some erratic performances since his £23m move from Paris Saint-Germain three years ago.

Doherty's arrival ensures that Jose Mourinho currently has two natural right-backs in his squad going into the new season, although how long that remains the case is unclear given that Aurier is reportedly unsettled in north London.

Tottenham face something of a dilemma as to what to do with Aurier in this transfer window. He ought to be at least an important squad member, given that Doherty may only be an injury or suspension away from the Ivorian being needed at right-back, while the 27-year-old was Spurs' joint-best tackler last season despite the aforementioned criticism with which he has had to contend.

However, with reports of him being unsettled at the club, and with Doherty's arrival seemingly pushing him to a backup role at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the ex-PSG defender may indeed see his future elsewhere, with his rejection of Wolves suggesting that he has clear designs on where he envisages his post-Spurs career.
