United Legend To Take Wales Job?

Wales job: Unlikely

Former Wales forward Iwan Roberts has called for Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs to be given the Wales national job. Roberts has led the calls for current manager John Toshack to resign, claiming the rebuilding process has stalled.

Roberts said: “Any optimism has gone within one game of our qualifying campaign. Toshack’s taken the players as far as he can. It’s time for a fresh voice and face. Giggs would be my choice; he would gain instant respect from the players and would inspire them.”

It is believed Toshack is willing to vacate his post following Wales’ 1-0 loss to Montenegro on Friday.

Ryan Giggs would certainly be the obvious choice. Wales’ best spell in recent years was under a playing legend with no managerial experience, Mark Hughes.

With the right manager and a bit of luck Wales could be capable of pulling out the odd result. They still have a bit of quality in Bellamy and Bale.

Ryan Giggs would be a good appointment but there’s no way I can see him taking the job whilst still having a playing career. And I don’t see him cutting his career short to take over as Wales manager. So the FAW (football association of Wales) may have to wait another season or two.

A number of candidates are believed to be in the frame for the job. Ladbrokes have Chris Coleman as favourite at 5/2 with Dean Saunders at 3/1 and under 21’s manager Brian Flynn a 5/1 shot. Giggs is well out at 12/1.

I’ve no doubt Giggs would be the best choice for the job, and he’s said in the past he would like to do it. But for the time being the Welsh wizard is still playing Premiership and Champions League football, and I don’t see him giving that up for anything.
