Whenever Birmingham come to Villa Park the fans don’t expect any stupid errors. There’s always more than just three points on the line as bragging rights and pride come into the equation, however, just before the half an hour mark The Villains left themselves down when they failed to defend a routine corner ball and Lukas Jutkiewicz tapped home at the back post.

When Dean Smith sits his side down after the adrenaline of such a huge derby win has worn off, he’ll have some stern words to say about the way his side fell behind. In huge derby games like yesterdays, there’s no way a club like Aston Villa should be conceding goals like the one they shipped early yesterday as Jutkiewicz, Birmingham’s biggest threat from corners, was allowed to ghost in at the back post and slide home.
In the end, it didn’t matter as just ten minutes after the 29-year-old scored the game’s opener Villa had completely turned it around with goals from Jonathan Kodjia and Jack Grealish, but Dean Smith’s side can’t be expected to just be able to outscore every team that turns up at Villa Park. If they’re serious about making a promotion push the poor defending will have to be picked up on and they’ll need to form a water-tight backline, yesterday it didn’t cost them, but in the future, it easily could.
You can see The Villains’ dismay at conceding such an easy goal here:
Nice work leaving their only ariel threat unmarked

He made the same run on the previous corners…. surely that should’ve been picked up? Defence needs a rocket

The Villains were fuming to see themselves concede such a simple goal and will be desperate to kick out the mistakes for future matches.
