West Ham United are ‘still pushing’ to sign Lille midfielder Amadou Onana this summer, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

The Lowdown: Previous bids

At the beginning of July, the Sky Sports journalist reported the Hammers had made a £19.2m bid for the 20-year-old, which was later rejected by the Ligue 1 club.

A week later, it emerged that the Irons had once again moved for Belgium international. This time around, West Ham had made a bid worth £25m, but this was also rejected by the French outfit.

As a result, it was suggested that David Moyes’ side had turned their focus to other options in the transfer market.

However, just a few days later, Sheth revealed that West Ham had made a third offer to Lille. Thought to be £31.7m plus add-ons, it was reported that the club were ‘seriously considering’ the offer.

The Latest: Sheth’s latest update

Sheth has now provided a fresh update on West Ham’s pursuit of Onana.

Taking to Twitter, the reliable journalist claimed:

“West Ham United still pushing to sign midfielder Amadou Onana. They remain in talks with Lille. Discussions centre around fee and structure of payments. West Ham’s last bid was for €38m.”

The Verdict: Huge signing

AS Monaco manager Philippe Clement spoke of how he had attempted to sign the midfielder from Hamburg before he made the move to Lille, revealing how highly he rates the youngster.

He claimed: “I believe very strongly in Onana’s quality. Consequently, we didn’t get the chance to work with him, but for me, he’s a player with a big future.”

Such claims can be illustrated by the 20-year-old’s underlying stats. As per FBRef, compared with positional peers across Europe over the past year, Onana ranks in the 94th percentile for tackles, in the 88th percentile for non-penalty goals and in the 79th percentile for aerials won.

A dominant presence at 6 foot 5, it is no wonder Moyes is so keen to add the Belgian to his midfield. If GSB can finally agree a deal with Lille, this would be a fantastic signing for the Hammers.
