West Ham History

West Ham United, formerly known as Thames Ironworks FC were founded in 1895, soon after the first professional football team in Essex, Old Castle Swifts FC, were declared as bankrupt. Thames Ironworks owner Arnold Hills offered four thousand, ten-shilling (50p) shares in a new club called West Ham United, who were founded as a company on 5th July 1900 – they were promoted into the Southern League First Division straight away. Unlike other Premier League clubs, West Ham are known for the multiple stadiums they have played in. Thames Ironworks FC started off at Hermit Road in Canning Town in 1895, before moving to Browning Road in East Ham two years later. The Memorial Grounds became the Hammers new home for seven seasons, before moving to their most notable stadium – Boleyn Ground (Upton Park) in 1904. In 2016, West Ham took charge of the London Stadium which was built for the 2012 Olympics in London, they have been playing there since.

The Hammers were most successful through the late 50s to 70s. They won the Football League Second Division twice, as well as the FA Cup three times; however, their most iconic honour has to be their European Cup Winners’ Cup victory in 1965. 12 months after winning the FA Cup, West Ham were victorious over Munich in Wembley, thanks to two goals from star Alan Sealey.

Vic Watson is the Hammers all-time top goal-scorer with an incredible 326 goals, in front of legend Geoff Hurst with 249. Iconic English defender Bobby Moore played 647 games for the Irons, and present player Mark Noble made the most Premier League appearances – 375.

Over the recent years, West Ham have had many star players in their squad. Dimitri Payet’s wonder free-kicks will always be remembered, as well as other young stars such as Frank Lampard, and Rio Ferdinand who both started their careers out with the Hammers. Sebastien Haller was the Hammers world record transfer fee paid for a player, the Frenchman arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer of 2019, but has yet to find his Premier League form. West Ham are currently in a relegation battle with the bottom three, as they hope to improve on their poor recent form. David Moyes has returned to the club as manager, just one year after departing on his first spell. It was a strange decision to re-hire the former manager, and he is not proving his stay just yet in the short space of time he has had since late 2019.
