After returning to Barcelona following eight years with Arsenal, Cesc Fabregas joined the Gunners’ London rivals Chelsea and has become a regular in the Chelsea side despite not playing much this season.
The 31-year-old midfielder made an instant impact at the club and with him and Diego Costa, Chelsea clinched yet another Premier League title four seasons ago. In that season, Fabregas was instrumental and recorded a staggering 19 assists.
The following season, the Spaniard found it tougher going as under Mourinho, Chelsea had a terrible season. Despite having a more solid season under Conte – a season in which Fabregas won yet another title – Fabregas’ performances have steadily dropped and he’s now entering the final run of his career.
At 31, Fabregas just doesn’t have the energy as Kovacic, Barkley and Jorginho. And in Sarri’s system, it’s essential to have midfielders who can get up and down the field quickly to not only initiate the press but also break on the opposition.
Despite playing a key role in Chelsea win over Liverpool in the EFL Cup, Fabregas’ time at the west London club seems to be coming to an end. Jorginho is firmly entrenched as the starter for Sarri and in truth, Fabregas can’t play in the other two midfield roles.
At his age, the midfielder could still be a contributor for a Premier League side and should seriously consider leaving the club. He could well play for a mid-table team and could provide some serious quality and experience to a side fighting in the top 10.
After years of being one of the best midfielders in the league, it might be time for the Spaniard to find a club where he can finish out the rest of his career.
