The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for Harry Kane’s future to be secured…

Though he signed a new deal last year, there is still a lot of concern that he could look to leave the club. He has had a sensational 18 months or so, and with top forwards becoming increasingly hard to come by, there’s no doubting that the Englishman will soon become a man in-demand.

Thus, it came as no surprise to learn that according to the Gambling Times, Tottenham are open to discussing a new deal for the striker, despite the fact that his current deal still has a number of years left to run.

Though discussions are yet to get underway, it seems likely that if a team does come calling, the Lilywhites will look to move in swiftly and agree fresh terms, but our landlord isn’t so sure that’s the best course of action.

To the contrary, he thinks that Tottenham should avoid giving him a new deal unless it is unavoidable.

Here are TWO reasons why…

 Financial Cost

He only signed a new deal last season, so why bother wasting more money on agreeing another contract?

Beyond the simple fact of a salary increase, Tottenham would also have to deal with the prospect of signing on bonuses, agent fees and everything else that comes with the territory. With a new stadium being built, they aren’t made of money, and so these are considerations that need to be made.

At the end of the day, if Kane is to ever really be happy, he’ll need to be among Europe’s top earners. According to the Daily Star, he currently earns around £100,000-per-week. Are Tottenham ever going to double or triple his wages to match some of Europe’s highest earners? Certainly not anytime soon, and so any attempt to increase them is, realistically, futile.

Dangerous Precedent 

Harry Kane has been doing well, undoubtedly, and he deserves a higher salary, for sure. But if Tottenham make the decision to extend his deal, that will set a dangerous precedent for all of his teammates.

There are a number of other players like Toby Alderweireld, Dele Alli and Hugo Lloris all of whom have been close to or on par with Kane over the last few months, and so they would undoubtedly expect new deals too.

This could set along a string of dominos that Tottenham simply aren’t prepared for, and so Pochettino and Levy can’t take this decision lightly.
