Southampton supporters were left with mixed reactions in the Transfer Tavern on Sunday after seeing their side only muster a 1-1 draw away to Brighton in the Premier League, yet the point moved them up to ninth place in the table ahead of Burnley’s clash with Newcastle United on Monday night.

Mauricio Pellegrino’s men went into their encounter at the AMEX Stadium having beaten West Brom 1-0 in their most recent league outing, and they looked on course for back-to-back successes when Steven Davis gave them a seventh minute lead. However, the visitors were unable to add the crucial second and were duly punished as Glenn Murray rose highest to head home Pascal Gross’ teasing cross just seven minutes into the second half, thus preserving a point for the Seagulls and keeping them just a point behind their South Coast rivals in the Premier League table.

Thus, the result stimulated mixed opinions from our resident Saints fans in the Tavern on Sunday night, although almost all of them were in agreement that goalkeeper Fraser Forster could have done better with Murray’s second half header.

The 29-year-old has struggled for form and confidence for much of this season and also made costly errors against Manchester United and Newcastle United – this all after a flying start to his Southampton career when he first made the move back in 2014, form which has since earned him six England caps.

And the shot-stopper will be well aware that he has to improve quickly if he is to remain ahead of Alex McCarthy in the pecking order, although the Saints hierarchy may well be looking at other goalkeeping options in the long-term should Forster continue to struggle.

Thus, here are THREE goalkeepers who could replace the 29-year-old at St Mary’s…

Michel Vorm

Michel Vorm was impressive for Swansea City between 2011 and 2014, and deservedly earned his move to Tottenham in the summer of the latter year.

However, the Dutchman was never really going to dethrone Hugo Lloris as the number one at the North London club, and he hasn’t moved any closer to doing so in the last few years either with just 34 appearances to show for his time at Spurs, of which only ten have come in the Premier League.

Thus, at the age of 34 and entering the twilight of his career, Vorm may seek first team football once again, and given Forster’s troubles at Southampton alongside Vorm’s efforts for Swansea and indeed Spurs when called upon, he could be the man to take the number one jersey off of the Saints shot-stopper.

Joe Hart

Joe Hart’s Manchester City career has nose-dived since the arrival of manager Pep Guardiola, hence his loan spell at Torino last season and his current one with Premier League rivals West Ham.

And the 30-year-old has quickly become Slaven Bilic’s number one at the London Stadium having started all ten of their league games thus far, in which time he has kept three clean sheets but conceded 19 goals.

And although he has been unconvincing at times during his Hammers career, the England international was excellent against Crystal Palace last weekend to underline his goalkeeping credentials, yet his future is far from certain as West Ham’s loan deal reportedly doesn’t include an option to buy.

Thus, Southampton should get in on the act and launch a move for the Englishman in the summer.

Tom Heaton

Arguably, Burnley’s Tom Heaton was the best goalkeeper in the Premier League last season, with his ten clean sheets in 35 appearances helping Sean Dyche’s men preserve their top-flight status.

And the 31-year-old has since been rewarded with three England caps in the last 15 months or so and he is now a regular fixture in Gareth Southgate’s squad, to the point that he appears to be ahead of Forster in the shot-stopping ranks.

And although Heaton looks set for a sustained spell on the sidelines after injuring his shoulder earlier this term, he is an excellent goalkeeper who is sure to attract interest in the summer, and Southampton should be in that race in a bid to lure him to St Mary’s.
