Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City were given an absolute thrashing by Everton at Goodison Park this weekend and their supporters here in the Transfer Tavern didn’t like it one bit!

The Citizens were absolutely outplayed by the Toffees throughout the game, which eventually finished 4-0, and it showed that there is plenty to work on at City under manager Pep Guardiola.

But before the game, news began to circulate that City are interested in bringing Spurs full-back Ben Davies to the club, which seems completely natural with their options in that area getting no younger.

Davies has impressed when given the opportunity at White Hart Lane and there are plenty of Spurs fans in the Tavern who believe he should be given a lot more game-time than he currently receives.

But with Danny Rose in the first-team, it’s never going to be easy for the Swansea City man to really force his way into manager Mauricio Pochettino’s long-term plans.

That in mind, then, we think he’d make a cracking recruit for City and here’s three reasons why…

He’s a versatile option in the back-line

Whilst many seem to consider Ben Davies as only an attacking left-back, it’s easily forgotten that he played as part of a back-three throughout the whole of the Euros for Wales.

Alongside the likes of James Chester, Davies excelled in a more central role which is great news for City – because essentially they are getting a player who is excellent at full-back and one that can fill in at centre-halve too.

Manchester City need the cover

Competition is what keeps things ticking over at the biggest clubs in the world and you get the feeling adding Ben Davies to this Manchester City squad would certainly enhance the competition on the pitch.

Gael Clichy is almost always assured of starting games but if Guardiola was to bring in the Welshman, former Arsenal man Clichy would certainly have to up his game from the off.

City could do with that injection of youth

City’s defence is an ageing one and there is absolutely no getting away from it. Their fans here in the Transfer Tavern know that if they are to continue hunting for league and cup glory, they need to invest in some defenders that have the potential to develop, not ones that have already reached their peak.

Ben Davies is just 23-years-old and would be a fantastic starting point for that sort of rebuilding.
