Another season, another new manager on Sunderland- or so it seems. However Black Cats fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are optimistic about what their new boss can bring them.

The Black Cats have developed quite a tidy habit of bringing manager after manager to the Stadium of Light hotseat and this season it is David Moyes, who has been tasked with the job of keeping his side in the league.

Whether they can exceed expectation is yet to be seen but the Scotsman has lots to do before the Premier League starts in a matter of days.

We know the former Real Sociedad manager well from his time with Manchester United and Everton, but what can we expect from him as manager of Sunderland?

Here’s THREE things to look out for…

A sense of determination

Perhaps one of the most important things we can expect during Moyes’ tenure in the North East- his ability to instil a sense of determination and grit in his squad.

Lets be realistic, Sunderland’s main aim this season will be remaining in the league, getting as high up the table as possible. To do that, as well as getting a handful of wins on the road, he will need to make sure his side are picking up points at the Stadium of Light.

Gritting out those 1-0 victories when needs be is important, but as we’ve seen plenty of times in the past, David Moyes can really get a sense of determination flowing through his squad.

Getting the best out of Jermaine Defoe

Another massive task for Moyes will be getting Jermaine Defoe to fire the Black Cats as far away from the relegation zone as possible this season.

18 goals arguably kept his side in the division last season and if there is one thing that is going to keep them safe again this year, it’ll be getting him in the goals once again.

Sunderland have the likes of Jermaine Lens, Will Buckley and Jordi Gomez around him to provide the assists, so it will be down to the former England international to dispatch the goals.

The ability to play through criticism

One thing David Moyes is renowned for is being no-nonsense. From dropping under-performing stars to arguing on the touchline- he’ll bring heaps of passion if nothing else.

But one thing we saw during his turbulent tenure at Real Sociedad was his ability to play through criticism and ride out tough spells.

The fans really turned against him during his time in San Sebastian, and you’ve got to credit the Scotsman’s courage as he finished the job before getting the sack in November 2015.

It’ll be a bumpy road for Sunderland this season, but Moyes isn’t the sort of man to walk away.
