Vincent Janssen has been a polarising figure here in the Football Transfer Tavern since his arrival at Tottenham.
A shocking miss during his opening game in pre-season made him the butt of a number of jokes from rival fans, but our Landlord is still backing him for great things.
His record speaks for itself, and it will surely be no time before he finds himself at the peak of the Premier League scoring chart.
It is important that Janssen gets regular opportunities next season however, and with Harry Kane firmly entrenched as Spurs’ number 9…that may mean a change in formation for Tottenham.
In fact, it may mean going back to basics…and utilising a 4-4-2.
With that, THIS 4-4-2 Lineup is how Tottenham can get the best out of Vincent Janssen………
GK: Hugo Lloris
An obvious one to start with.
Michel Vorm has performed well during pre-season with Lloris still on holiday; but there is only one man who is going to start next season.
An unbelievable shot stopper that commands his 18 yard box; the ULTIMATE goalkeeper
LB: Danny Rose
Last season was a coming of age for Danny Rose, and he has finally begun to show the promise that he showed as a teenager.
A pace, forward thinking defenders; there are few better left back’s in the Premier League.
Expect him to kick on even more next season.
CB: Toby Alderweireld
Toby Alderweireld was one of the signings of the summer last year. Picked up for a bargain price – he slotted right into the Tottenham first team and looked unstoppable all season.
His partnership with Jan Vertonghen was a real highlight, with the pair complementing each other perfectly and making it very difficult for oppositions attackers to get through.
CB: Jan Vertonghen
Jan Vertonghen is currently injured, and that will likely make him unavailable for a few weeks as the season begins; but that surely won’t stop him kicking on as the season progresses.
His back-line leadership makes him a crucial part of the Tottenham set up, and will slot right back in when available.
RB: Kyle Walker
Kyle Walker’s trajectory draws parallels with Danny Rose’s, in that last season was a real coming of age.
Walker had suffered with injuries and inconsistency for years, but last season provided him with an environment from which he was able to really find his form.
He formed an excellent partnership on each wing with Rose, which they carried into the England setup with England this summer – expect more of the same from Walker next season.
LM: Christian Eriksen
Typically a number 10 or left winger, playing Eriksen on the left hand side of midfield will definitely be a change of pace – but you cannot doubt his quality.
He has adapted to everything in the Premier League, and our Landlord is backing him to do the very same playing slightly deeper on the left.
Look for him to pump balls through to his TWO strikers.
CM: Eric Dier
Eric Dier had a stellar campaign last season, and you would expect more of the same over the next year or so.
He will be forced to sit quite deep in this formation, mopping up any loose balls and stray passes that make it by his more advanced team mates.
CM: Deli Alli
Deli Alli is of course more versed at playing higher up the field, but in order to accommodate two strikers, he will be forced back slightly.
With Dier behind him he will still have the freedom to rampage forward; but he will just have to learn to pick his moment and time to do so.
His passing will become key in this role; often needing to release the ball rather than run with it to prevent getting out of position.
RM: Erik Lamela
Erik Lamela’s Tottenham career has been up and down so far, but this summer he reaffirmed his desire to kick on and retain his place in the first team next season.
He has proven himself once more during pre-season, with both his finishing and general play a real highlight.
He will need to up his defensive role in this formation; but if he can do that he will become a quality all round midfielder.
ST: Harry Kane
Everyone knows how good Harry Kane is, and like Hugo Lloris there is no way you can leave him out of this team.
A prolific front man, he is only getting better – and you would back him to fire Tottenham back to the top of the table on his own back.
He will be even better with a striking partner…
ST: Vincent Janssen
Vincent Janssen was absolutely prolific in the Dutch league, and Mauricio Pochettino has seen fit to bring him to London as a result.
As he adapts to the league, there are very few better players to learn from than Harry Kane, and so a partnership between the two strikers could work wonders for both of them.
Expect a bagful of goals next season.
