Here in The Transfer Tavern the topic of discussion has been about Newcastle United’s survival hopes. The discussions have been indepth about players the club should bring in come January.
Steve McClaren has a mammoth task ahead of him with regards to who should sign and who should leave the club during the January transfer window.
With McClaren surely needing to balance the books to ensure he can bring new players to St James Park, he faces a mammoth task of deciding which players should head for pastures new.
As we know selling out of form players is one of the hardest tasks a football manager will face as he looks to raise sufficient funds to bring the type of quality with passion and desire for the ups and downs of a relegation battle.
Here at The Transfer Tavern we have tried our best to compile a list of players we believe Steve McClaren should try and sell come the January transfer window, and the following five are who we consider should be top of the list for the axe.

Yoann Gouffran
29-year-old Yoan Gouffran joined Newcastle United back in January 2013 for a cut price fee of £500,000 from Bordeaux. Gouffran has been out of favour since Steve McClaren took over as manger at St James Park, despite making 66 appearances for Newcastle in two seasons prior to McClaren’s arrival.
The midfielder has made just one solitary appearance for the club this season and knows at his age he needs to be playing first team football.
During his time so far at Newcastle he entered the club’s record books of scoring in five consecutive games, becoming the first player to do so since Alan Shearer back in 1997.
Mike Williamson
It appears that time on Tyneside could be up for 31 year old Williamson. A near ever present in the side during Alan Pardew’s tenure at the club, a starting place has been hard to come by under new manager Steve McClaren.
A place in the side has become hard to come by for Williamson as McClaren has favoured the partnership of Fabricio Coloccini and Chancel Mbemba. The defender was shipped out on a months loan to Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers last month following just two appearances in the Capital One Cup against Northampton Town and Sheffield Wednesday so far this season.
Sylvain Marveaux
Another player who’s time at St James Park appears to be coming to an end. Marveaux joined Newcastle from Rennes back in 2011 when he signed a five year deal with the club. Since joining the club four years ago Marveaux has made just 57 appearances for the Tyneside club.
Marveaux was shipped out on loan by Alan Pardew to Guingamp for the season, and again Steve McClaren looks to have decided the player is not part of his plans at St James Park and a January exit could certainly be on the cards.
Emmanuel Riviere
Riviere has had an inconsistent spell on Tyneside since joining the club in a £6 million move from Monaco. He has fallen way down the pecking order at St James Park this season as Steve McClaren has seen his favoured strike force or Alexander Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez linking well up front for the club.
Given the price tag the player signed for his form in front of goal has been poor he has scored just one goal in his time at the club. A move away from the club would do both parties good and free up vital wages for McClaren to spend elsewhere.
Papiss Cisse
Cisse has been at St James Park since January 2012 when he became an instant fan favourite following 13 goals in 14 appearances. Since those early months though Cisse has struggled and with Alexander Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez being the preferred starting pair up front, Cisse’s time on Tyneside seems to be well and truly up.
The fans have become restless with the lack of commitment and work rate from the Senegelese striker. It is believed McClaren would be willing to let the striker leave the club and at this stage of his career the 30 year old needs first team football.
