The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for Toby Alderweireld to stay at the club this summer. The Belgian’s future has been a big topic of debate for a while now, with a new contract yet to be agreed between the two parties.
Indeed, over the last few months, it has appeared as though the main stumbling block has been the fact that the Belgian and Tottenham haven’t been able to agree on fresh terms – but now that doesn’t appear to be the case. Indeed, it appears as though time has officially run out on that matter.
Whereas previously, it seemed as though the lack of progress was down to an agreement not being reached, now it simply appears as though he has made the decision not to sign a deal, regardless of what is offered to him. As a result, a departure is now looking inevitable this summer.
This has certainly come as a blow to our resident Lilywhites, with many holding out hope that this saga could turn around in their favour.
Now, though, that’s looking very unlikely indeed.
Landlord’s Verdict
Losing Alderweireld, whichever way you spin it, is a huge loss for Tottenham. He’s one of their best players, and though other defenders have impressed this term, when he’s on form, nobody is better than the Belgian.
Spurs should be able to earn a hefty sum from his sale, but the 6ft1 Belgian international will leave a significant gulf in class at the back for Tottenham were he to leave.
