According to the News of the World, Federico Macheda could be on the verge of leaving Manchester United in the summer. The Italian youngster has failed to make an impact whilst on loan at Sampdoria this season, leaving Sir Alex Ferguson with doubts over the striker’s future at Old Trafford.
The Italy Under-21 International shot to stardom as a 17 year old when he scored the late winner against Aston Villa in the 2008/09 season. The win effectively secured the Premier League title for the Old Trafford club but the young striker since found games hard to come by in a United shirt.
Macheda was shipped out on loan by Ferguson in the January transfer window to gain first team experience with a view to integrating the young striker in the first team squad next season. The impact of Javier Hernandez and the ever increasing profile of Danny Welbeck however, have left Macheda in the shadows with the Italian only contributing one goal in sixteen appearances on his loan stint at the Genoa club.
Ferguson has been outspoken in his praise of ‘Kiko’ in the past and his potential to succeed at Old Trafford. It seems however, that the Scot himself has questioned the progression of the young Italian.
“We’re looking to convert the loan to Sampdoria in Macheda for sale outright. Otherwise, look elsewhere” Said Ferguson to the News of the World.
The young Italian would be valued at around £6 Million which would be a substantial profit for the Manchester club after picking him up on a free from Lazio as a youngster. After what seems to be a stall in the progress of the United forward, it could be good for all parties concerned as it is believed the youngster would welcome a permanent move back to his homeland.
If Macheda and Manchester United do part ways this summer, he will surely not be forgotten by the Old Trafford faithful after the wonder goal that all but sealed the title for United in 2009.
