Paul Scholes. Man, magician, legend. That much of Manchester United’s domestic dominance is owed to the man from Salford, there can be no doubt. So it will be a sad day for the red half of Manchester and a thankful one for the rest of the Premier League when the Englishman signals the end of an era by hanging up his boots at the end of next season.
The 35-year-old midfielder’s resurgent form had led to a recall to the England squad by manager Fabio Capello earlier this year but Scholes, probably recognizing his own limits as much ignominious as the desire of the band of players that helped England qualify, magnanimously rejected the offer.
“I am coming to the end of my playing career and I maybe have one year left,” said Scholes in an interview in Florida.
Scholes, who narrowly missed out on his tenth Premier League title and his 23rd club honour in total, then confirmed that he has already set his sights on coaching the next generation of players.
“I have started doing my coaching badges back in England and hopefully one day I will be able to coach kids or coach some kind of team somewhere.”
By the end of his career, the diminutive dynamo may have tallied up over 450 appearances for his club, scoring over 100 goals.
