Arsenal Are The Sharpest Shooters Amongst Europe’s Elite – We’ve Got The Stats To Prove It

A couple of weeks back I wrote about the Premier League and with the view that along with the volume of possession of a team, the total number of shots can be the best gauge to a side’s performance and likelihood of scoring goals.

I have applied this shots at goal method to the Champions League to see who has their shooting boots on and if it can help deduce a possible winner or at least identify teams who may be involved with goals.

The sharpest shooters in the group stages were Arsenal. For every shot at goal they scored on 28% of occasions (18 goals/64 shots at goal). That augurs well for the Premier League side and they scored with 2 shots from 9 when beating Barcelona on Wednesday night which is great going.

Before Spurs fans begin to despair, your team is joint 2nd in the shots conversion rate from the group stages with the onion bag being rattled 23% of the time with every shot. (18 goal/79 shots at goal). Obviously the likelihood is for more shots at goal dependent on the strength of opposition in the group stages but those stats do give hope for an English success in the Champions League this season.
Of the other two English sides Chelsea are scoring on 15% of occasions they shoot at goal and Manchester United come out worst of all the remaining sides in the tournament scoring with only 1 in every 10 shots at goal.

The full list in shooting boots order is below.

The % indicates goals from shots at goal and all figures are from the group stages.

The eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed that the Tavern has of late secured the services of a chap that for some has been nothing shy of an absolute menace to bookmakers HERE.

Claims like this are common of course.

The difference with The Sportsman is that he has the minerals to present his track record in black and white HERE.

So who is The Sportsman? HERE.

Well now, when it comes to football, one man has for many years been the most noticeable, the most controversial, and occasionally the most successful blogger this country has ever produced. His pithy words and abrasive style make him as famous off the pitch as he is on it. This man is Escapini. "I love football. Football she's a cruel mistress. She's, she's more than a mistress. She's a wife, she's a mother, she's a daughter, she's an errant child. She's a… she's a… she can make you laugh, she make you cry. She can bring tears me eyes. She can bring blood to me shoulders. She can bring a kettle to the boil." "Cause football is about nothing, unless it's about something and what it is about, is football."
