Arsenal have already been active in the summer transfer window, but the Premier League champions could now be looking for a more cost-effective solution to strengthen their squad.
The Gunners have agreed a deal worth around €40 million for Christos Tzolis and also made Piero Hincapie’s move from Bayer Leverkusen permanent for a similar fee.
They have also explored a potential move for Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, although that deal would require a significant financial outlay.
However, with defensive concerns emerging, Mikel Arteta appears to be considering a more economical option.
Arsenal Considering John Stones Move
According to The Sun, Arsenal are weighing up a move for free agent John Stones as a possible short-term replacement option if William Saliba’s injury proves to be serious.
The French defender is awaiting further assessment after being forced off during France’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain due to a recurring back problem, with fears he could miss several months.
Stones has emerged as a potential solution given his availability on a free transfer, while Arteta’s previous working relationship with the defender could also play a role. The Arsenal boss worked closely with Stones during his time as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City.
The 32-year-old, who Guardiola previously described as “incredible”, left City after a decade at the club and became the first unattached player to represent England at a World Cup.
Despite limited game time before the tournament, Stones impressed during England’s knockout run, starting against Norway and Argentina while helping contain some of the competition’s biggest attacking threats.
With the World Cup now complete, Stones and his representatives will assess their options, with interest believed to be coming from both England and abroad.
