Aston Villa: Fans react to injury update on Wesley

Aston Villa: Fans react to injury update on Wesley - Aston Villa News

Many Aston Villa fans are reacting to a tweet from Ashley Preece in which he reported an update on Wesley’s recovery from manager Dean Smith.

As reported by Preece, Smith said: “He is still not close to joining in. We are still working on his range of movement and getting him up to his sprinting capacity that he was at before the injury. He has still not managed to get to that yet so it is ongoing work with the rehab staff.”

The club have been hopeful that he will return in 2021 as there is currently a lot of pressure on the shoulders of Ollie Watkins. Fellow striker Keinan Davis has not scored a goal in the top flight and Watkins, at times, has been the only recognised striker currently available for selection.

Due to this, many have been left frustrated that Smith did not look for another striker in the January transfer window so that he had some good cover.

You have to feel for Wesley due to the sheer length of time he has been out –  already missing no less than 40 games (Transfermarkt).

The latest comments from Smith emphasise that he still has a lot to do to get back to full fitness and then show the form and confidence that is needed in the Premier League. He only scored five goals in 21 Premier League appearances last season, but this is still decent to have for some cover, with Watkins currently without a deputy.

Here is what Villa fans said following the news:

“Is there potential that Wes’s injury could effectively be career ending?”

“Sounds like he might never get back to that ‘sprint level’ either. Hoping I am wrong but sounds like he has already played his last game in the Prem”

“13 months out and still not able to sprint yet? Sounds very much like his career could be over. Massive shame.”

“His career is over, I know Villa have a duty of care, but after 13 months & he still hasn’t achieved range of motion?! It’s just awful.”
