Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings was slammed by some members of the media following his first-half error against Chelsea this afternoon.

The Lowdown: Southgate in attendance

The centre-back was once again selected from the off by Steven Gerrard, making his eighth start from a possible nine in the Premier League this season. The 29-year-old was looking to play his part in a third clean sheet from a possible four, with England manager Gareth Southgate in attendance.

However, Mings misjudged an early header which allowed Mason Mount to put the visitors in front at Villa Park, with the latter netting a free-kick in the second half to seal the win for Graham Potter's side.

The Latest: Reporter reacts

Football365 writer Jason Soutar was one of those to react to Mings' error on Twitter, sharing this damning verdict:"

"Tyrone Mings trying to get Gerrard sacked it looks like."

The Verdict: Afternoon to forget

Villa were much improved in the final third, creating plenty of chances, but they were left to rue Mings' early error.

The defender was the worst player on the pitch as per SofaScore metrics, ending with a match rating of 6/10. He lost three of his five duels, made an error which led to a goal (as mentioned) and failed to make an interception. Mings was also dribbled past once and gave the ball away on eight occasions.

It will certainly go down as an individual display to forget for Mings, and the result could pile further pressure on Gerrard following reported talks of a possible sacking over the last week.
