Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings drew the wrath of many supporters following his performance in the 3-1 Boxing Day defeat against Chelsea.

The home side took the lead against the reigning European champions at Villa Park but it lasted just six minutes, with Matty Cash handing the visitors a penalty when he brought down Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Half-time substitute Romelu Lukaku then put Chelsea ahead after what Birmingham Live journalist Ashley Preece called 'lazy' defending from Mings, who was beaten far too easily in the duel by the Belgian striker. Jorginho later sealed the three points for the Blues with a second spot-kick in stoppage time.

The numbers behind Mings' struggles

Mings' SofaScore rating of 6.1/10 was the lowest of Villa's outfield players. He contested four duels during the game and won only one, losing 75% that he contested. Furthermore, only two of the seven long balls he attempted found a team-mate.

The 28-year-old also picked up his fifth yellow card of the campaign, which means he will be suspended for Villa's next game, which at the moment is a trip to Brentford on Sunday.

Here's what some Villa fans on Twitter made of his performance yesterday, with one criticising the defender as "dumb".

These Villa supporters lambast Mings

"Mings reminds me of Worzel Gummidge, sure he changes his head without telling us, looks a world beater at times then does things like that for the Lukaku goal, so bloody frustrating"

"Mings gets done too many times when he’s marking someone. Switch off for a second in this league and it costs you."

"Mings is poor and there is no doubt Gerrard will go after a centre half to replace him."

"Clear today that Watkins and Ings cannot play together. Mings is not good enough for this team, nobody will convince me otherwise. Bertie looked good when he came on. Sanson & Luiz had a solid game too. But yes, clear to see there is an identity coming through, we will improve"
