Arguably, if there’s one club that need to have a strong January transfer window more than anyone else in the Premier League, it’s West Ham.

Our Hammers fans here in the Transfer Tavern are hoping more than anything they can get some good deals done when the window opens but they’ve got last summer’s exploits fresh in their mind and that’s worrying them.

The club’s summer signings have proven absolutely woeful so far this year with the likes of Simone Zaza doing absolutely nothing to endear him to the fans.

Indeed, many want Slaven Bilic to redeem himself in the window as, if he doesn’t, the club could be playing Championship football next season.

A huge window awaits, then, and the Croatian must have already been knocking on Karren Brady’s door to ask for certain things once it opens.

Our landlord certainly agrees and reckons these two things are what the club need to do most this January…

 A proven forward

The Italian striker Zaza has been the flop of the season for many and so West Ham need to get a new striker in as soon as possible.

Andy Carroll might be back but he’ll probably be injured again soon and so only a proven forward will now do. West Ham would have been fine if they’d have had someone that can stick the ball in the net up until now so you feel if they can pull this off they should be safe.

 Clear the deadwood

West Ham have too many players that simply aren’t good enough to play for the club and that is having a negative impact on those that are.

The amount of dross the club signed in the summer seems to have really watered down the ability of the squad from last year and that is why they find themselves in this predicament. It’s time, then, for Bilic to wield his axe and streamline his ranks for a strong second half of the season.
