The 2017 summer transfer window was a mixed one for Glasgow Rangers.
Of course, the capture of Alfredo Morelos will have to go down as one of Mark Allen’s biggest successes. The Colombia international was signed for £1.08m, as per Transfermarkt, and has since scored 77 goals in 137 matches for the ‘Gers. Ryan Jack, another who has done well since joining, came in on a free transfer.

However, not every new arrival three years ago lived up to expectations. Both Eduardo Herrera and Carlos Pena cost the Glasgow side more than Morelos yet were failures, whilst Fabio Cardoso is another who ended being a waste of money.

The Portuguese defender cost £1.35m from Vitoria Setubal during a spell when Pedro Caixinha was attempting to put his own stamp on the squad. The 26-year-old arrived at Ibrox with a pedigree, having come through the youth system at Benfica, and he had made 27 appearances for Setubal during the 2016/17 campaign.
However, he failed to ever really show why the ‘Gers had paid a seven-figure sum to purchase him. During his one and only term in Scotland, he made just 18 appearances and it didn’t take long for him to be out of the door at Ibrox, with him joining CD Santa Clara just 12 months later.
The move back to his homeland came via a free transfer, meaning that the ‘Gers had made a loss of £1.35m in a year and 18 matches. Whilst the signings of Morelos and Jack have proven to be shrewd pieces of business, the transfers of Pena, Herrara and indeed Cardoso are the defining purchases of Caixinha’s short reign at the club.
