Chelsea have endured an uneven opening to the 2026/27 campaign, with Xabi Alonso still trying to find the right balance in a squad that underwent significant changes over the summer.
The Blues have shown plenty of attacking promise, but their midfield has been an area of concern following the departure of Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City. Chelsea were also unable to complete a deal for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara before the transfer window closed.
That has left Alonso’s side looking at potential reinforcements, and one Premier League midfielder appears to have emerged as a particularly strong option.
Chelsea Leading Race for Alex Scott
According to The Telegraph, Chelsea are currently at the front of the queue to sign Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott.
The Blues already tested Bournemouth’s resolve during the summer, making multiple offers worth more than £60 million for the England international. However, the Cherries rejected their approaches and made it clear they did not want to lose one of their most important players.
Chelsea have not been put off by those failed attempts, though, and are expected to return for Scott as they continue to assess their midfield options.
The 23-year-old has strengthened his reputation considerably in recent months, with his form for Bournemouth earning him international recognition. Scott made his first England start in the 7-0 Nations League victory over Croatia and impressed alongside Elliot Anderson.
His rapid rise has also attracted interest from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Liverpool, meaning Chelsea are not guaranteed a straightforward route to an agreement.
Bournemouth are understood to have no intention of selling Scott during the January window, but the situation could become considerably more interesting next summer.
The midfielder is due to enter the final year of his contract at the end of the season, while attempts to secure an extension have reportedly failed to make significant progress. That could leave Bournemouth with a difficult decision over whether to cash in rather than risk losing control of his future.
Chelsea’s previous willingness to spend heavily on Scott, combined with their need for another midfielder, could therefore make them the club to watch.
With the Blues already leading the chase, the coming months could determine whether their long-standing interest finally results in Scott making the move to Stamford Bridge.
