Chelsea are already mapping out their priorities for the summer transfer window, with several key areas in need of improvement.
A new goalkeeper tops the list after inconsistent performances from Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen, while attacking depth is also a concern following Liam Delap’s difficult start to life at Stamford Bridge.
Defensively, questions remain as well, with a lack of consistency at centre-back highlighting the need for reinforcements.
Now, the Blues appear to have been handed a significant boost in their pursuit of a long-term defensive target.
Chelsea Handed Lukeba Boost
Chelsea have received encouragement in their chase for RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba, with the German club now open to his departure this summer.
The 23-year-old centre-back — known for his “tough-tackling” style — has impressed since joining Leipzig in 2023, but all parties are now aligned on a summer exit.
Accoridng to TEAMtalk, the club are prepared to make Lukeba their primary sale of the window, alerting interested teams to his availability.
While Lukeba’s contract includes a release clause of around £70 million, Leipzig are believed to be willing to accept a fee closer to £55 million. That figure has already been communicated to clubs through intermediaries, with Chelsea among those kept informed. Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are also monitoring the situation closely.
Chelsea’s long-standing interest could now prove crucial. The club have tracked Lukeba for over two years and view him as a strong fit for their defensive rebuild.
With uncertainty surrounding the futures of Benoît Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo, adding a reliable and physically dominant centre-back is seen as a priority. Levi Colwill is expected to remain a key figure, but depth remains a concern.
With Leipzig ready to negotiate and the asking price lower than his release clause, Chelsea have been handed a genuine opportunity to land one of their long-term targets. However, with several Premier League rivals also in the race, the Blues will need to act decisively if they are to secure Lukeba and strengthen a defence that has shown clear signs of vulnerability this season.
