Chelsea prepared to rival Manchester United for “explosive” Uruguay international with 13 G/A in 2025/26

Chelsea’s difficult 2025/26 campaign ended in frustration, with the club finishing 10th in the Premier League and missing out on European football entirely.

A turbulent season also saw two managerial changes, with Xabi Alonso now set to take charge from June as he begins a major rebuild at Stamford Bridge.

With a new era about to begin, Chelsea are already shaping their summer transfer plans — and it appears they are ready to go head-to-head with Manchester United for a highly rated international defender.

Chelsea Set to Rival United for Araújo

Maximiliano Araújo is emerging as one of the more intriguing full-back options on the market this summer, with both Chelsea and Manchester United monitoring the Sporting CP defender closely.

The 26-year-old Uruguay international, who has been described as “explosive” and has registered 13 goal contributions in the 2025/26 season, has impressed with his dynamic blend of pace, aggression and attacking output from left-sided areas.

According to Caught Offside, both Premier League clubs are tracking his situation, with Sporting holding a strong negotiating position due to his long-term contract and an £70 million release clause.

Araújo’s versatility is a major part of his appeal, capable of operating as a traditional left-back, a wing-back, or even in more advanced wide roles when required. That flexibility has made him a standout target for clubs looking for tactical variety.

Manchester United’s interest is driven by ongoing issues in the left-back position, with injuries and inconsistency continuing to disrupt their options, particularly around Luke Shaw’s availability. Araújo is viewed as a potential long-term solution who can bring both defensive intensity and forward thrust.

Chelsea, meanwhile, remain active in the same market, with their recruitment strategy under Alonso expected to prioritise young, athletic and technically secure players — a profile Araújo fits well.

With both clubs now circling, a transfer battle could be developing as the summer window approaches.
