Chelsea preparing £69 million for “exceptional” World Cup winner

Chelsea have made an entertaining start to life under Xabi Alonso, with the Blues playing an aggressive style that has produced plenty of goals at both ends of the pitch.

It is a high-risk, high-reward approach that has already shown plenty of promise, although defensive weaknesses remain a concern.

Despite that, Alonso reportedly wants to add even more firepower to his attack.

Chelsea preparing Nico Williams bid

Chelsea are reportedly preparing an €80 million (£69 million) offer for Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, according to Fichajes.

The 24-year-old has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, with Arsenal and Manchester United also linked with the Spain international.

Williams remains tied to Athletic until 2035 and reportedly has a €90m release clause, meaning Chelsea’s proposed offer may fall short of what is required to prise him away from Bilbao.

Barcelona previously tried to sign the winger in 2025 but failed to reach an agreement, while Arsenal have also been unable to turn their reported interest into a deal.

Williams has made 204 appearances for Athletic, registering 38 goals and 37 assists. He has also become an established Spain international, earning 36 caps and scoring six goals.

Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has described Williams as “exceptional”, and Chelsea could now be prepared to make a significant investment to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
