Man City braced for Ederson exit, monitoring replacements

Man City has shortlisted several goalkeepers as potential replacements for Saudi Pro League linked Ederson. ESPN reports that FC Porto and Portugal No.1 Diogo Costa is amongst that list alongside Espanyol stopper Joan Garcia.

Ederson’s future is again the subject of much speculation, following last summer’s Al Nassr interest. The Saudi Pro League club is said to be prepared to offer the player a contract worth nearly three times what he earns at City. The move was reportedly close, and Al Nassr as well as other SPL clubs are expected to reenter the race for the player’s signature this summer.

City want to keep the player but are reportedly open to sanctioning a sale if their evaluation is met and the player requests to leave.

Ederson could leave Man City

Ederson, 31, has been the main man at City since joining from Benfica in 2017, making over 300 Premier League appearances. He boasts six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three EFL Cups and one Champions League during his stay at the club.

He also holds the record for the most assists by a goalkeeper in Premier League history with seven. Should he depart, he would leave as a club legend and the most decorated Man City goalkeeper of all time.

Replacing him will be some feat, especially given Pep Guardiola’s preference of playing out of the back.

Juventus shot stopper Michele Di Gregorio and Lille’s Lucas Chevalier are other names said to be of interest to City, although any signing new signing would not be guaranteed a No. 1 spot.

Ortega a possible Ederson replacement

ESPN reported last year that current City backup Stefan Ortega has the full confidence of his manager. Guardiola would have no problem starting Ortega as first choice goalkeeper is Ederson leaves, with the German an accomplished stopper in his own right.

His famous save to deny Son Heung-min in City’s 2-0 win over Spurs last season proved a pivotal point in not only the match but the title race at it ensure City entered the final day on top of the table.

Ortega’s current deal is set to expire next summer, meaning he will seek clarity on his role before either signing an extension or weighing up his options elsewhere. Bayer Leverkusen is rumoured to be interested in the player’s signature.
