Oscar Cardozo has become quite a hot property in the European market of late. After recently expressing his desire for a move away from Portuguese champions Benfica, the 27-year-old was, not unsurprisingly, linked with a move to talent hoarders Manchester City.
Perhaps more substantially, David Moyes’ Everton has also been linked with the former Paraguayan player of the year after being suitably impressed by the forward in a Europa League tie earlier in the season. Cardozo scored twice that day, assisting Benfica to a painful 5-0 thrashing of the Toffees. He also later scored three times against Liverpool in the quarter-finals.
In total, the striker, nicknamed Tacuara – meaning ‘big cane’, scored an incredible 36 goals in 42 games for the club last season. The striker’s impressive record has now also attracted the eye of Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp who will be looking to improve his attacking options before Spurs kick-off their first ever Champions League campaign next season.
It’s a move that will probably pre-empt Robbie Keane’s departure from the club with Aston Villa currently shouting the loudest to land the Irish forward. Rumours are also abounding regarding Russian forward Roman Pavlyuchenko’s future at the club.
However, it’s expected to require a large sum of money to take the Benfica striker, who is currently training with the Paraguayan squad for the World Cup, away from the Estadio da Luz. Upon signing for the Portuguese club from Newell’s Old Boys for a total fee of £9.3m, Cardozo became Benfica’s second most expensive player in their history.
The Portuguese champions will, therefore, only acquiesce a respectable bid; what exactly that figure will be remains unclear.

Any fans of clubs other than Tottenham i’m sorry for guvnors’ comment. I think he’s nine years old or something to come out with that statement. Thats exactly the kind of statement that makes other fans think we’re OTT you tadpole. Scoring that amount of goals in portugal doesn’t count for sh*t in the PL, although he has a good record against scousers. Could be an inspired signing or an expensive flop (rebrov). If we’re going to sign another forward surely we have more ambition than this though. We want a guaranteed 25+ striker, get me one now!!!!
