The Leeds United fans in the Transfer Tavern have been looking back at the 1975 European Cup final, 43 years to the day that they were beaten 2-0 by Bayern Munich at the Parc Des Princes. Bayern’s win was their second in the competition, although they’ve since gone on to win the tournament five times, whilst Leeds are yet to feature in a European Cup/Champions League final since that game.

The actual game finished 2-0 to Bayern Munich, although it should have been so different for the Whites. Leeds United actually took the lead in the game in the 62nd minute, with the referee giving the goal, before being convinced by Bayern’s Franz Beckenbauer to consult with his linesman before eventually chalking the strike off. Bayern midfielder, Rainer Zobel, who started on the night, has since said that it was a goal and should have stood.
Whilst Bayern Munich have gone from triumph to triumph since that night in Paris, things have not been s smooth for the Elland Road faithful. The Yorkshire club was relegated from the old first division just even years after coming up short in Paris, and despite managing to return to the old First Division and win one more title, the club was relegated from the Premier League in 2004 and are yet to return to England’s top flight, with their current 14 year absence from the top flight in their history.
