The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are optimistic about their side’s chances against Man City this weekend. Whilst the Citizens’ recent record is far superior to Tottenham’s, the Lilywhites have proven that they are as good as anybody on their day.

With Mauricio Pochettino at the helm, anything is possible, but the Argentine has more than a few problems to contend with this weekend. Unfortunately for him, his usually stellar defensive line is in a bit of a crisis at present, with two major absentees. Both Davinson Sanchez (suspended) and Toby Alderweireld (injured) are out of the game, meaning that the Argentine has a couple of big calls to make as he looks to ensure that his defence is solid.

He does have options, but it’s certainly going to require some tactical nouse as he looks to get the best out of his team. He could line up a few ways, but our landlord thinks that he has plotted the best possible back five.

With that said, this is how Pochettino could line-up his defence against Man City without Alderweireld and Sanchez…

LWB – Danny Rose

His future may be uncertain, but his quality on the field certainly is not.

He’s not a popular man amongst Tottenham circles at present, but everyone recognises just how good he is.

Undoubtedly Tottenham’s best option down the left, he will offer both an offensive edge and defensive solidity when required against the Citizens.

CB – Ben Davies

Though often featuring out wide this term, Tottenham’s problems could require him to shift across to a more central position this week.

It could be a role that suits him, allowing him to make the most of his defensive capabilities.

Cesar Azpilicueta has done a similar thing at Chelsea, and it has worked wonders. Davies could have a similar impact for his club on Saturday.

CB – Eric Dier

Though naturally a midfielder, Eric Dier has found more success and game time in the heart of the defence over the last year or so.

He’s proven to be a competent defender, and whilst Tottenham have a lot of options in midfield, the same cannot be said at the back.

He won’t be too happy about it, but needs must for Tottenham, and Pochettino has little other choice. He will be solid, as he always is.

CB – Jan Vertonghen

The only Tottenham regular to play in his own position amongst this central defensive trio.

Pochettino will have no doubts about Vertonghen, even without his defensive partners.

He’s a leader, he’s consistent and he is more than good enough to compete with Man City’s attackers. Tottenham will need him to have a good game, especially with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero charging at him.

RWB – Kieran Trippier

Serge Aurier and Kieran Trippier have been battling it out this year, but Trippier could be a better opton this time around.

He’s more solid defensively than Aurier, and given Tottenham’s issues, that could be important.

He may need to cover for his unnatural central defensive teammates, whilst Tottenham will also likely spend large parts of the game under pressure – meaning his defensive skill will be key.

A solid choice.
